I don't think the lack of a Medicare item code in Au is a huge issue. When I had a detached retina I had top BUPA cover & still paid $6k out of pocket. I sure as hell was not looking for it on the cheap, when I had a cataract done it was a similar story as the best lenses weren't available on Medicare.
Whilst I'm probably not typical I would say there are a huge amount of cashed up (older than me) Australians that would find the money for the treatment.
Your eyesight is critical to your quality of life & I've been very fortunate to have a team of incredible doctors in Australia
