No worries. I have a finance background, so not exactly in the healthcare space but I believe I have done sufficient research on the topic so that I could hold a reasonably sophisticated conversation with an ophthalmologist discussing the intricacies of glaucoma and AMD (and of course, the various treatment options available!). I also like to think I have the skillset to differentiate between a good and a bad company from looking at the financials!
The initial tip I received to invest though was from someone with vast experience in the industry, and who made his fortune picking small companies like this in the healthcare space, in the ASX and abroad. When this guy gives me a call (usually once every few years, not very often unfortunately), I drop everything and research it. These infrequent calls have never once been wrong, and have always (literally 100% of the time) delivered returns many multiples higher than my initial investment. I don't know how he does it, some people are just wired differently I guess. I know he invests in many companies, so he probably only gives me the tip when he comes across a company he views as a sure thing. He never tells me why he likes it though, forces me to do my own research (which I find is helpful in ensuring I back my own call even through the ups and downs).
Honestly, I am continuing to buy with the assumption that the LCD has virtually a 0% chance of being implemented. That is definitely IMO of course, it is completely out of my control but from my research I just cannot see it being implemented. It appears to be completely unprecedented, I cannot find a similar example. LCDs are almost always good news, and the very few bad ones have been due to the products in question having non-existent clinical evidence and no industry support. MIGS is completely different as it has the backing of large medical organisations and associations, lots of clinical evidence, and there are many noticeable errors in the LCD itself! It is a risk of course, but it is not one that is causing me to stay on the sidelines. I would say there is a higher chance of a cure for glaucoma being discovered (which is incredibly unlikely) than this LCD being implemented.
