The 2RT thread covers all that quite well, but the opportunity there is potentially massive (although is quite speculative until a partnership is achieved). We can look at wet AMD treatments as a guide. They only treat around 15% of people but are some of the most profitable drugs globally (within the top 5 out of all drugs for all diseases). They fetch valuations in the 10s of billions of dollars. Dry advanced AMD (10% of the market) has recently emerged as a focus area for treatments, and these treatments are also fetching similarly high valuations. All these patients (plus a lot more) all begin with early to intermediate stage though, and it is very easy to diagnose (so even though there currently is no treatment - everyone knows they have AMD even before it progresses to late stage). Being able to intervene earlier would be crucial to minimising the risk of blindness. Whilst the anti-VEGF drugs for late wet AMD are very effective, disease progression in the later stage is so fast that if you miss even one treatment (often a frequency of monthly) you are likely to irreversibly lose a noticeable percentage of your vision. Intervening earlier ensures you never have to experience this much riskier stage of the disease. Not to mention as well that monthly injections in the eye are both very inconvenient (especially for elderly people) plus are very uncomfortable. They are also incredibly expensive and are the most expensive healthcare component of the Aus government budget.
