Just heard back from Tom in response to this proposed move, here’s what he said:

This sort of thing happens from time to time. The last time was in 2020 and the changes proposed were not codified.

It is currently going through a public comment period. It has elicited a very strong response from doctors and the societies that support them. We note the recent update from one of the private payers Cigna, that talks about coverage without any restrictions. The complete opposite to the MACs.


Seems like things like these are proposed fairly often, but don’t usually amount to anything. Interesting as well is the fact that one of the payers themselves (Cigna) have come out in support of procedures like canaloplasty (I believe it was posted about here when they did), so I can’t really see the proposed changes by the MACs amounting to anything. Just Glaukos doing whatever it can to stay alive I guess, they know how much better canaloplasty is than stents
