Just a bit of out of the box thinking for consideration:

Thinking about the posts by kens.

The TPM insulin patch so far has been intended to address basal insulin requirements. This is no small matter, as we all understand.

But what if we could do more...

Imagine a two part sectional patch configuration. One section would be the slow, constant-rate basal insulin transdermal TPM delivery system, ideally good for a full week. The other, separate, part of the patch would deliver a rapid absorption TPM-insulin formulation that could deliver a measured dose in minutes rather than hours. This compartment of the patch would be filled on demand from an external reservoir by the user by mean s of a miniaturized pump fitted to the patch.

In a configuration like this the patch could possibly address basal insulin requirements as well as acute insulin requirements, allowing the patch to provide for basal insulin needs as well as allowing the patch to transient insulin requirements associated with meals or other factors that would otherwise require an insulin pen or other means of injection.

Could something like this be an achievable possibility? It would seem to depend on whether TPM could be configured to deliver insulin rapidly enough to be able to respond to transient insulin needs.

It does seem like a product that would be worth looking into. If it is achievable it could virtually eliminate the need for insulin injections in all but the most extreme circumstances.
