I grew up with mainframes costing 7 digits - all singing all dancing computers - and then mini computers - and then PC's - all single machines handling everything until the internet took off.
Nowadays the 7 digit machine price is down to 5 digits because of Data Centres. You buy a cluster controller in effect and it talks to as many Data Centres as it needs to build the functionality required.
Instead of one manufacturer , say Aston Martin? You have a Ford engine , a Ferrari gearbox, Maserati suspension and Renault chassis etc etc etc using that as an analogy!!
