‘No CSG near schools’

LISMORE Council will ask the State Government to extend the CSG exclusion zones for villages to include areas with a school.

When the proposed two-kilometre exclusion zones were announced last week, several areas, including Rosebank and Coffee Camp, were excluded.

Cr Simon Clough put forward an urgency motion that council write to the State Government congratulating them on the policy, but requesting information on the definition of a village for the purpose of CSG-exclusion and extending them to anywhere with a school.

Mayor Jenny Dowell indicated she would draft a letter and send it to the other councillors for approval. She suggested Lismore’s regionally significant farmland also should be protected in the same way that wineries and horse studs in the Hunter Valley have been excluded.

"I will be mentioning the small-scale, high-value agriculture industries we have in the region, and also the poll in which 87% of people voted to remain CSG-free." Cr Dowell said.
