Whereas horizontal wells in coal seems may not use hydraulic fracturing (fraccing), when extracting shale oil or gas and tight oil or gas fraccing is used.

Not necessarily, it depends on the reservoir. CTP's own Surprise well is an example of a horizontal well into a tight oil reservoir that was not fracced. If the well will flow unassisted but at subcommercial rates, then horizontal drilling without fraccing is an option, especially if there are natural fractures.

It should work even better in gas reservoirs than oil because gas tends to flow at lower relative permeabilities than oil. I really hope they put a barefoot horizontal leg into a Stairway gas sand at Mereenie to test it.

Fraccing started in the Amadeus Basin much earlier than the 1990s - to my knowledge in the 1960s.

Yeah there was some fraccing of the appraisal wells as far back as the 60s but the Amadeus didn't start production until the 1980s and the second wave of development drilling in the 90s was where they really started fraccing extensively.
