NT gives Beetaloo Basin the go ahead

Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles has announced fracking in the Beetaloo Basin project can proceed.
Fyles says the project will secure the territory’s energy supply while also protecting environmental and social amenity.
“Along with our world-class renewable resources, our highly prospective onshore gas resources will support the energy transition to renewables not only for the NT, but for Australia and the world,” she said.
The decision came as the government released the final report of a 2018 study into hydraulic fracking. Fyles said this found risks could be managed if all the industry’s 135 recommendations were followed.
“We are being careful and balanced in managing the transition so that we never lose sight of what makes the Territory unique and the best place to live. This is why the NT government has undertaken a very considered approach over the last four plus years to get it right, to take the time,” she said.
