THE decision to decrease the size of the northern gas pipeline by Jemena is clearly a commercial one. But the contributing factors may cost the Territory for years to come.

Both sides of politics blame each other for the decision. The CLP argues it is the uncertainty of Labor’s fracking moratorium while Labor counters the tight time frame of the Giles CLP Government is responsible. Others believe it is a lack of confidence in the CLP winning the next election which is driving investment freezes.
The truth is somewhere in the middle.

The company building a gas pipeline to join the Northern Territory with the east coast will reduce the diameter of the piping, citing the low number of NT gas producers ready to commit to delivering the gas.

Pipeline operator Jemena has said to meet its contractual obligations to complete the project and have first gas flowing by 2018 it needed to order the steel by yesterday.
The pipeline will now be 12 inches in diameter instead of the alternative size of 14 inches.
