I will have one last go at this. The reason for this whole mess is the fact that Putin wanted to reunify the old Russia. Ukranian Cossacks form a large part of what is regarded as Russian heritage. He expected them to welcome him with open arms. Even a madman like Putin is not going to poison the land and the people he is so desperately trying to get back under his control. You do read anything but doomsday scenarios?
