AEMO warns of east coast gas shortage

Australia's east coast faces the fresh risk of gas shortfalls after the market operator warned of low supplies, a new concern for households and big users amid a cold winter crunch.
"The supply of gas in all or part of the east coast gas system may be inadequate to meet demand," the Australian Energy Market Operator said in a notice sent to the gas industry on Wednesday.
Sources said the market operator was convening a phone hook up with gas players on Thursday to discuss the unfolding scenario.
The situation has been triggered by the depletion of southern storage inventories, including the large Iona gas storage facility in Victoria, along with constrained production from the state's Longford gas plant.
"Reduced storage facility capacity may pose a risk to gas supply adequacy in southern jurisdictions on peak demand days during the winter peak demand period through to 30 September 2024," AEMO noted.
An industry response could include Queensland producers and shippers delivering gas to users in the southern states.
The market operator warned in March that gas generators may be forced to burn diesel to keep the power grid running after authorities warned that states face a catastrophic supply shortfall from next year unless new sources of supply are developed.
