1.2Australia’s nuclear ban was introduced via a Greens amendment in the Senate on 10 December 1998. There was less than 10 minutes of debate on the matter. The Howard Government at the time was seeking legislative support to build a new nuclear research reactor at Lucas Heights. With no immediate prospect of a nuclear power station being built, the Government accepted the amendment so it could proceed with the new research reactor.

That goes to show how unwilling they were to press the issue.Yet now, after decades of opportunities to introduce nuclear they have persisted with climate change denial ("climate change is crap" and coal promotion (lumps of coal in parliament. Now that climate change is undeniable and the teals are pinching liberal seats, all of a sudden nuclear is suddenly green and the sole solution. Unfortunately nuclear power , for Australia is way too expensive and will take decades. No doubt nuclear power in Northern European countries that have poor renewable resources is a better solution, but not for Australia.
