Today, the UK government gave the green-light for the construction of two reactors at the Hinkley Point C site in Somerset.
Theresa May's new government had previously taken the wind out of the sails of nuclear energy industry in the UK when it announced a thorough review of the agreement. The uncertainty created by the review has now cleared with the decision to proceed with the building of the reactors.
The go-ahead, the first in over 20 years, ensures that nuclear will continue to provide clean, base-load electricity with which other sources of energy, including intermittent and variable wind and solar power, can be integrated.
