Radiation is like dust. You can breath it, and it can get on your skin and clothes, and if left for long with eventually cause exposure. Closing your windows means less (not all) gets in. Same as wearing long sleeves, masks etc. One source of truth? No. We can only decipher what we read in the media, and work out what is fact, and what is hype. In disaster situations, non profit media are your best bet. This is not a war, we don't live in a dictatorship. This is a natural disaster, there is no reason why the state run media would shield us from information. They have their own family and friends involved in this disaster. So, best source of information is NHK. If you don't understand Japanese, go to ustream, and watch NHK World, which is in English.
