Regarding the commentary on Cook needing to keep the Greens on side for preferences- just looking at the last Federal election in 2022, Green first preference votes in WA were 12.5% which was just above the national level of 12.25%. But when you look at state-level elections in WA, at the 2021 election, Greens got 7.1% of the first preference vote which was down 1.8 percentage points from 8.9% the previous WA state election. So at a state level, far, far less people vote Green. Yes, those preferences are important to Labor, but it would be a cold day in hell for the Greens to ever preference the Libs/Nats over Labor. So Cook is more about keeping the left of his party on side, but with the authority of an election win, it at least opens the door for him to have more influence on overturning the mining ban if he saw it as advantageous.
