The new fuel can't come from old reactors. at least not yet? as the US has stopped recycling UNF, I can foresee where they will one day, but to do that to get fuel they will need two acts, one to allow the recycling and another to finance it.
GEH did intend to recycle UNF at one point, but it was not for the US consumption as some argued, it was being designed for the UK as a fuel for PRISM reactors, the US did not get the deal they wanted from the UK, but I do think they will have another shot at it once the VTR proves beyond doubt that recycled fuel will be s good thing f0r both the UK and the US.?
But there is another option rather than using UNF and it still comes from "recycle fuel from shuttered facilities."
It is called Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility (PLEF) for short.
Which of course was a SHUTTERED FACILITY that once upon a time did manufacture enriched Uranium using gas diffusion.
