It's very interesting that SA does this on "good days" when demand "could fall to zero" but still relies upon its zero costs and emissions free link to Victoria and gas generation "It does this by running a minimum amount of gas generation, and through the recent commissioning of spinning machines called synchronous condensers that do not burn fuel. It also needs a link to a neighbouring grid, in this case Victoria, so it can export surplus production" - of course SA does not import power from the fossil fuel emissions free La Trobe valley coal fired power stations at most other times outside of a few hours around midday in the month of October when fleetingly it provides "the lowest prices in Australia" for a few hours and one month - what great achievement!!

It would appear from the AEMO assessment that this great achievement is "likely to happen in October, in sunny conditions when temperatures are mild enough not to trigger large demand for air conditioning. And it’s likely to happen on a weekend, when demand is usually lower due to reduced industrial activity". No doubt the magnificent milestone will be met fleetingly for a few hours around midday in October and without the link to Victoria, fossil fuels etc outside of this midday period in October (when it will possibly be generating too much power - which will have to be sold off cheap or wasted) the renewables will be producing insufficient electricity (for all but a few hours at midday in October) which will either come out of thin air or from fossil fuel sources. No doubt their "synchronous condensers" are also capex/operating cost free with no losses operating on rotating inertial kinetic energy only suitable for short tern variations in load/supply (i.e a passing cloud). They really do not appear to have learnt a lesson from the 2016 fiasco - what a way to run a grid!! but OK whilst Victoria and gas fired generators supply and fund the seasonal/diurnal variations. The major problem is that renewables are given priority whilst baseload and fossil fuel "peaking" take second fiddle (and of course do not cost anything so a to add to the "system" costs on low LCOE stand alone renewable energy which provides power when the uncertainties of weather allow it.

PS sorry about my sticky "t" key
