NuScale has developed a small modular nuclear reactor, the first ever approved by the US NRC, and due to construct its first plant in Romania by 2028 (displacing CO2-intensive coal). Its technology scored well on our patent framework (charts below).
The first focus is safety. Each reactor is 77MWe and contains just 5% of the fuel of a conventional 1GW reactor. This permits passive emergency shut-downs, simply by flooding the reactor from an overlying reservoir of coolant, using a patented configuration of valves.
The second focus is simplification. Across numerous patents, the reactor design avoids costly and bespoke components. Hence ultimate costs could be below $3,000/kW. In our prior screen of SMR concepts, we noted this threshold would make SMR economics very exciting.
