"What I'm saying is that the US nonproliferation lobby has focused on the technology controls, and myself and Snyder don't believe this can work much longer. We don't think Silex should be commercialized, but the technology looks so impressive that we believe it will and there is no way to stop it."
I'm curious, you don't think technology controls will last as effective barriers to prevent determined states from acquiring/developing new enrichment technologies like SILEX. And Silex commercialising the technology would only further incentive such states to pursue their own development of the technology – or why develop it when you could just 'acquire' it (SLX/GLE would want to have some robust cyber defences..). So what would you suggest is the best way forward for the non-proliferation regime, if the old tools are inadequate and the laser enrichment genie will eventually be out of the bottle one one way or another?
It hasn't stopped me from investing in the company (my get out: if it's not SLX, it will be another company or govt to eventually fully develop it anyway), but I do very much agree the risk is there. The smaller geographical and energy-usage footprints of a laser enrichment facility compared to the current centrifuges (and we've seen the efforts Iran has gone to to conceal even those facilities, tunneling mountains etc) means the technology surely represents a proliferation risk, to the extent it would create significant concealment/monitoring challenges.
I see the global anti-nuclear activist movement (which is fairly active in Aus and the US) as potential obstacles to SLX if/when the commercialisation goal starts becoming a reality and they catch on. Will certainly make a few noises at the very least. Another flurry of academic papers like seems to have happened in the years around from 2010 when the Wilmington facility was being permitted and built would seem likely.
What do you make of AUKUS? tbh that strikes me as a bigger proliferation than SLX commercialising its technology. Not because Australia would try to also develop nuclear weapons or anything like that, but just because the arrangement will almost certainly undermine the NPT regime. Like it's a massive double standard – sanction Iran to the hilt for enriching (and its weapons program), but then basically just give Australia HEU..With the precedent set, what's stopping, say, Russia from entering into a similar partnership with Iran and gives it HEU for subs or whatever.
Anyway, really enjoyed reading your contributions above. Interesting points and well thought out. THanks!
