Wind and solar are in fact well matched because there's usually more wind at night when the sun is not shining and power demand is lower. Sure they are intermittent and appropriate firming is required. But the other side of the equation also needs to be looked at. Nuclear or coal base load generation also suffers from excess generation when the demand is low and both methods are not easily or quickly started and shut down. Other methods need to be used to balance the load. Gas is far more suitable as peak load generation because it can be relatively quickly started and shut down. Hydro is even better as it can be called on instantly.
