Why do people use sunscreen? Because an accumulation of solar radiation particularly at an early age when skin is more vulnerable, can cause skin cancers. This is an accepted fact by medical science. As we age because the damage is cumulative our sun exposure has been increased and skin specialists (my son in law is a skin specialist GP) are inundated with aging patients requiring bits to be removed in order to prevent the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. In Northern Australia , where we live, this is a greater problem because of the greater intensity of sun exposure. The same principle applies to X-rays and more particularly for CT scans (because of the higher intensity). Dentists and GPs are careful to check these previous exposures before recommending additional procedures because of the risk of an accumulated high dose of radiation that can lead to... cancer.
