WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17), along with Congressman Brandon Williams (NY-22) introduced H.R. 8674, the Milestones for Advanced Nuclear Fuel Act.

This legislation would, if passed, direct the use of a milestone-based framework for the development and demonstration of nuclear fuel projects in the Nuclear Fuel Security Act of 2023 and DOE’s Fuel Cycle Research and Development program. Milestone-based frameworks tie future funding to demonstrated technical and financial success, thereby accelerating the development of innovative technology and protecting taxpayers from waste.

From the explanatory memorandum
"The Milestones for Nuclear Fuel act would direct the use of a milestone-based structure for thedevelopment and demonstration of nuclear fuel projects in the Nuclear Fuel Security Act of 2023 andDOE’s Fuel Cycle Research and Development program.

Specially, the bill directs DOE to award milestone-based projects across the domestic nuclear supplychain, including uranium production, conversion, fabrication, enrichment, deconversion, and recycling.Through a competitive process, the program will prioritize novel technologies and processes whileconsulting with experts from the private sector, utilities, the investment community, and the nuclear fuelsupply chain to evaluate proposals and assist in establishing milestones.

In addition, it requires the Secretary to submit annual reports to the Committee as part of the annualbudget request and a report on the practicability, potential benefits, and estimated lifecycle costs ofrecycling spent nuclear fuel into usable fuel for nuclear reactors."
