U.S. Department of Energy Releases LEU Enrichment Request for ProposalsJune 28, 2024WILMINGTON, North Carolina —Global Laser Enrichment (GLE) welcomes the U.S. Department ofEnergy’s (DOE) publication of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to establish a robust domestic supply chainfor low enriched uranium (LEU). We commend the DOE on the prompt issuance of this RFP and urge theexpedited publication of further funding opportunities for innovative technologies under the High Assay,Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) Availability Program. GLE intends to evaluate the LEU RFP andparticipate in the bidding process to accelerate the commercial deployment of next-generationtechnology at its Paducah Laser Enrichment Facility.GLE applauds the bi-partisan Congressional support and leadership from the Biden Administration topass legislation aimed at rebuilding domestic nuclear fuel capacity. Key to this package is the NuclearFuel Security Act, which directs DOE to promote diversity of supply and technologies and utilize a broadset of tools to incentivize new LEU capacity. DOE can support an expansion of domestic capabilitieswhile also supporting diversity and competition in the market, thereby facilitating innovation throughthe deployment of next-generation technologies. Building upon the SILEX uranium enrichmenttechnology, GLE has the potential to supply critically needed new U.S. capacity to produce both naturaluranium (conversion) and LEU, reduce DOE’s legacy depleted uranium liability, revitalize the WesternKentucky economy, grow our North Carolina operations, and provide energy security as the U.S. and itsallies pivot from Russian supply.
