There are deposits of pure underground hydrogen, although scarce and difficult to transport and store. A lot of energy is required to split H2O because it's a very be molecule. A far better solution is to split methane (CH4) which, being far less stable, requires 18th of the energy to split into hydrogen and solid graphite.
