Here is an example of why they do system "shakedowns". A temperature interlock, relied upon for safety failed to actuate at setpoint, apparently last week. It was reportable to the nrc. I'm not concerned that it is more than another niggle that they have "shaken out". I have no knowlege of the nuclear industry but In the oil industry we have generally tripple redundancy or 3 levels of safety on critical instuments to protect against failure of one, and trip testing is part of routine maintenance. (I imagine the nuclear industry far surpasses the oil industry for redundancy and shutdown systems) . A failure of one would be reportable , although it wouldnt have affected my pulse at the time it happend.
