It's not about being "blessed with the geography or climate required for hydro, good solar or wind resources or the real estate to accomodate them", as Singapore could attest to. If Singapore really thought that Mike CB's Solar String project was worthwhile, it could fund it. They won't because it's fundamentally too expensive.
The problem isn't having the land, sunshine, or wind required. The problem is determining how much storage is required to build a network that can meet the reliability standard required by a modern society. The AER requirement for the NEM is that it must supply 99.998% of load, and I have yet to see an intermittent wind/solar generation system that can meet that standard. You need dispatchable power, and the only emissions free dispatchable power is nuclear. We seem to be the only advanced economy, apart from maybe Germany, that hasn't worked this out yet.
