I tend to think the problem about timing is related to velocity of propergation similar to what we had with optic fibre loops where the signal would travel in the opposite direction if the loop was broken and seeing as how light travels at around 186 thousand miles a second which may not sound like much, but when you take into account long distances for each supply, you get the sync problems.
