Our problem is that (apart from Qatar Kuwait) we are the highest per capita CO2 emitter in the world - IMO we really need to do something about it even though in absolute terms we are (as a country with one of the lowest population densities in the world) about 16th in the overall world league. If you look at the statistics China is expanding at about 6% per annum but its CO2 emissions are now going up by around 2% - their electricity generation is going up in line with their growth (but their emissions are now falling back - it's India and other BRICS countries not doing their bit). From mmy persepctive I have a great deal od respect for China's efforts - their use of renewables (including nuclear) is impressive. Of the high voltage long distance transmission line the Chinese have about 20 of the top 22 projects (they operate at up to 1100kv DC). The Chinese use of hydro is also very impressive the 3 gorges dam project (22.8Gw) is now to be exceeded by the Great Bend dam on the Bramaputra River (Motuo project) is projected to produce 40 - 60 Gw - more than the whole of Australia) - the Chinese are moving fast and likely to be a powerful competitor in renewable (including hydro and nuclear) in the world - this is what really frightens America.
What really annoys me is the likes of Sewie how (IMO) are addressing a real and existential issue (climate change) and are the very ones who are stopping (or slowing) implementation of the solutions by delaying nuclear projects - really can't see any reason for us all to do what we can to promote all the solutions (nuclear is vital for zero emissions base load - it's pretty obvious that hydro is not suitable everywhere, batteries will not cope with wind droughts and synchronous inertia) - required for frequency stability. Roof top solar (and associated batteries) are just a scheme to rob Peter to pay Paul (Paul being owner occupiers and Peter being strata owners and renter - a weird outcome for Labor/Greens).
