Uranium ore in its natural state is not harmless. Radon gas seeping into peopkes homes in England accounts for 1000 lung cancer deaths per year and is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Australian Aboriginals speak of "sickness country" and have avoided certain areas for centuries. A uranium ore body 50Km outside our city in the headwaters of Queensland's largest river, is one such example. Left alone and avoided it is relatively benign but if disturbed and reaction with oxygen begins, particularly if the ore is crushed and milled creating a much larger surface area to react, the problems are magnified. After sixty years of nuclear power ther is only one country with an underground safe depository, Finland and they are yet to store any waste in it.
