Japan had developed a ship and shore based electromagnic railgun which can fire high volumes of non explosive projectiles over equivalent ranges to air defence missiles as a defence against incoming balistic, hyersonic and cruise missles defeating the incoming missle with kinetic energy.
The big benefit is that its a much cheaper option that firing expensive missiles and the cheap projectiles can easily be manufactured quickly in large volumes.
It's an ideal solution for Australia given our government has failed to establish an air defence network to protect Australians and our critical infrastructure.
The only problem is that it relies a large, stable source of power. Fortunately Japan has nuclear power plants. Without that all Japan's adversaries would need to do is wait for windless cloudy days to crush them.
Nuclear power provides more than energy, it's also an important part of national security. Even for countries that are vehemently to thermonuclear weapons like Japan.
