Yahoo Finance Talks With NEI’s Kotek About the Future of Energy and Infrastructure

If you have been reading the news recently, you may have noticed a few themes dominating the headlines, bringing our attention to a larger conversation on climate and the future of our most critical infrastructure in the U.S.
From the winter storms in Texas to Bill Gates’ ambitious plans to fight climate change, many of these stories have left us wondering: how do we create and maintain a more resilient, reliable electricity grid without carbon emissions?
Yahoo Finance tackled this very question with John Kotek, NEI’s vice president of policy development and public affairs. Following a discussion with Gates about innovative climate solutions and some of the power outages we've seen across the country recently, Kotek offered his views on what America’s energy future may look like and the vital role nuclear plays in a reliable and carbon-free energy grid.
“When you're focused on decarbonization, really, nuclear has a huge role to play alongside increasing shares of wind, solar and storage to get to a clean grid,” he said.
“I think the situation in Texas has really underscored the importance of having a balanced mix,” said Kotek.
“And as we strive to decarbonize the grid, we're going to need to take advantage of the positive attributes and compensate for some of the shortcomings of all energy resources.”
The coverage we have seen over the past few weeks highlights why we need all carbon-free sources—including nuclear, the leading source of carbon-free energy in the U.S. As the urgency of decarbonizing the electricity grid—and more importantly, achieving a carbon-free economy—grows, we can expect important conversations like this to continue to stand at the forefront of media.
