Large surface warships are sitting ducks in the age of the AI missile. IMHO they are all show with little go left in them.
Subs that don't have range limitations may at least deliver a chance of survivability to their crews.
I read that Block VI Virginia class subs will be equipped to conduct "organic sea bed warfare". I suspect that means leaving uncrewed weapons delivery platforms around the place but my knowledge on this is limited.
In any case, these subs won't substantially impact power balances for the next 10 - 20 years, by which time the geopolitical scene will have changed. They maybe seen as insurance on an unknown future.
