You do know they (the Chinese) built them, as a response to the US having built 400 military bases surrounding them, right? The closest US base on Jeju island, is only 500kms from Shanghai.
If we had 400 Chinese military bases surrounding our country, I would be demanding our Gov build on reef and atolls, to act as early warning bases for us too.
They (the Chinese) don't want a repeat of the 19th century, where the British blockaded the South China Seas, during the Opium war, which forced the Chinese into a surrender - not once, but twice.
Note, the Chinese are NOT the ones who conduct practice drills on blockade every year - its the US.
And the Chinese are NOT the ones who have bases surrounding Australia or the US. Its the US with bases surrounding China - more than 400 of them.
This is all about maintaining the US as the number 1 economic and military power.
Biden tried to get the G7 and Europe to back him. They politely turned him down. Biden tried to get South Korea to back him - they turned him down. Kamala Harris recently flew to South East Asia, to try to get them to side with the US, but they turned her offer down.
