Age-Related Hearing Loss Affects Clinician-Patient Communication
By Kelly Young
Edited by André Sofair, MD, MPH, and William E. Chavey, MD, MS
Nearly half of older patients report mishearing a clinician during a visit, according to a small study in JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery.
One hundred adults aged 60 years and older were interviewed about their hearing and interactions with clinicians. Fifty-seven said they had hearing loss. Some 43% overall said that they had misheard a clinician; this proportion was similar across age groups. The most common mishearing themes were general mishearing, consultation content (e.g., diagnosis, prognosis, medication), and clinician-patient communication breakdown (e.g., clinicians talking quickly).
A commentator writes: "Patients are missing instructions. They are missing diagnoses. They are missing medication information. When a health care provider speaks too quickly or quietly and/or background noise is present, patients with hearing loss will miss messages from physicians and nurses even if they are using the right language."
