FDA Approves Contraceptive Vaginal Ring That Can Be Used for a Year
It will likely be available in 2019 or 2020.

On Friday, August 10, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first-ever contraceptive vaginal ring that can be used for up to a full year, BuzzFeed News reports.
The product, called Annovera, was developed by the non-profit organization Population Council, which recently partnered with TherapeuticsMD, a pharmaceutical company, in order to market the ring to the public. As BuzzFeed notes, Annovera works like other contraceptive rings (like the NuvaRing) in that it’s placed inside the vagina, where it releases hormones like progestin and estrogen.
To use Annovera effectively, users must leave it inside the vagina for three weeks, then remove it for one week, where it’s then washed and kept inside a case. During the “off” time, users might get a period or a “withdrawal bleed.” Unlike the NuvaRing, you don’t have to replace Annovera at the pharmacy every month; you can reuse the ring for an entire year.
A spokesperson for Population Council told BuzzFeed that the ring won’t be available until 2019 or 2020, and it’s not entirely clear how much it will cost. The spokesperson added that Annovera will be sold at a discounted rate to federally designated Title X family planning clinics that serve lower-income people.
According to a press release from the FDA, the ring was studied within several clinical trials where it was tested for safety and efficacy. The results showed that approximately two to four out of 100 people may get pregnant during the first year they use Annovera — a statistic that is similar to the NuvaRing’s success rate. The FDA also notes that Annovera should not be used if you have certain medical conditions including current or a history of breast cancer, various tumors, abnormal uterine bleeding, or if you’re over 35 and a smoker.
The FDA’s report also included a list of side effects associated with Annovera, all of which are similar to other methods of hormonal birth control. The most common side effects reported included: headaches, nausea, yeast infections, abdominal pain, irregular bleeding, and breast tenderness.
In a statement, Population Council President, Julia Bunting, explained: “For more than 60 years, the Population Council has been at the vanguard of global efforts to develop innovative family planning methods that meet women’s needs. Having a single contraceptive system that provides a full year of protection while under a woman’s control could be a game-changer for some women.”
