    You can convert options to shares at any time before they expire by paying the conversion price (strike) to the company. Your options will become shares if you do this.

    You dont have to convert them though. You can chose to sell them instead (before they expire). If you sell your options, they belong to someone else. The new owner can convert them to shares.
