Tesla have employed him as their research partner, so, if you knew a mate with awesome tech, why wouldn't you have a chat with Elon and say, hey mate, remember one of your ex employees, the one that also set up this R&D lab that I work outta for Tesla. He and his crew have some really cool IP, lets see where this can go??

Or let ego get in the way and try and do it better on your own, which I get the feeling Elon is the opposite, he loves to embrace change, especially if its environmentally friendly, cheaper and improves the end product....
