H.C. Starck TungstenPowders, part of the Vietnamese Masan High-Tech Materials Group, owners and operators of the Nui Phao tungsten mine in Vietnam, have invested GBP 45M in a new Cambridge University based startup, Nyobolt Ltd, with technology to revolutionise the Lithium Ion battery world – this represents a 15% stake in the company.

Why ?

Because the use oftungsten in manufacturing the batteries anodes will make new-age lithiumbatteries FASTER & SAFER.

Professor Clare Greyfrom Cambridge University and colleagues researched alternative materials withwhich to construct better anodes for decades before they concluded a paper in2018 that anointed tungsten as a critical component of these anodes.

Consequently, Prof Greyco founded Nyobolt Ltd in 2019 and attracted the interest of HC Starck,ultimate owners of a producing tungsten mine.

With this technologynot just confined to the EV market but also to “power tools and home appliancesto electric vehicles and industrial robotics”, this will not only represent asignificant increased useage of tungsten but will also elevate the profile oftungsten in general,
