That's the difference between Kiwis and Australians, we don't think we are better than anyone or stand on a higher moral ground and preach others. Your assumption is incorrect, the overall relationship is always a subjective view, you can argue with someone endlessly whether another country is friend of foe from an overall perspective, and they are both right.
But there is no room for argument when it comes down to specific dimensions based on specific facts. You can have a beneficial and constructive relationship without bury yourself into positive or negative camp. Geopolitical relations is not same as rooting for a football team.
