The issue is not a matter if cost, for George Jones already said the "Chinese Built" Oakajee will be significantly watered down. But saying that Mits and MMX "still" has a role to play, he is flagging that the Chinese have already secured concessions from Barnett that the Chinese will be the major (not equal) stakeholders.
CIC (aka China) has not been allow to take ownership (even partially until now). It's not a case of whether the cost is too high that they haven't invested. They haven't been able to even if they wanted.
This is called Chinese grand standing used in negotiations.
Why would China pull the plug on Oakajee when it needs the security of supply (India looks increasingly likely to disappear as a supplier) and with Sino and Ansteel already waist deep. GBG is already producing DSO with Magnetite production in less than 12 months in what is one of the largest mining infrastructure project in Australia.
