If that were true, independents wouldn't be gaining so much in the polls.

Looks to me that the Indies are the ones to have gained from the hung parliament. It is obvious that people like the fact that they have more chance gaining for their electorate by going with the Indies.

The preferences are there to be used in the event your first choice gets the chop. Meaningless if your first choice gets in.
