Obama pushes for nuclear power despite Fukushima

US President Barack Obama has reiterated his support for more nuclear power, despite growing public concern in the wake of the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Speaking in Washington on Wednesday, Obama praised the perseverance of the Japanese people as they struggle to recover from the March 11th quake and put the stricken plant under control.

He said he has ordered a safety review of all nuclear plants in the US that would incorporate lessons learned from the incident in Japan in building new facilities.

Obama noted that nuclear power accounts for one-fifth of electricity in the US, and said it has huge potential as a clean source of energy.

Obama also set a goal to cut oil imports by about one-third by 2025, and instead increase domestic crude oil output and use of natural gas, to help ease the burden of rising fuel costs partially blamed on unrest in the Middle East.
