Yes, he was a sunni. No, he did not kill and torture all the non-sunnis in a country where the bulk of the population was shia. Yes, he did kill and torture anyone who opposed him - if you didn't want to be killed or tortured, just go with what the dictator says. That's the way dictators operate and is the only way for disparate groups of people to live together. Otherwise the country will be ripped apart.

America did not stop the killing. More people have died in Iraq since the americans went in than died under Saddam. And they are still dying.

It comes back to tribal boundaries again. If the states had been determined in 1921 based upon traditional tribal groups the problem would never have arisen. Sure, there would have been different problems, but always from an logically defined boundary. Look at the Balkans. Tito ruled with an iron fist. When he died the six countries held together for a while but then disintegrated into ethnic violence with genocidal results. Finally, the old borders were restored and the economies are picking up under re-established national identities and an atmosphere of security.

That is why the Iraq debacle was totally predictable if Saddam was removed. At least in the Balkans the UN/NATO/whoever worked towards removing the cause of conflict by dissolving Jugoslavia back into it's constituent states. Re-defining the nations as they were originally. The US have just removed the stabiliser in Iraq, and told millennial deadly enemies to just live together in perfect harmony and democracy like the good ol' US of A does. C'mon fellas, it can't be that hard.

Utterly destructive naivety - unless you believe it was deliberate.
