Although the French and British really stuffed it up in 1921 when they drew up the boundaries (the Sykes-Picot line). If they had carved up the ME along tribal lines (Sunni, Kurd, Shi-ite etc.) then peace may well be reigning there today. Unfortunately a stable ME wasn't on the agenda, hence the way the boundaries were drawn.
