As for the "true" inflation rate well the US government has done a splendid job of "manufacturing" its own figures to suit its needs... and has been doing so for years.

Did you know that the US government no longer factors in energy or food into CPI or inflation as they believe they are too "volatile" price wise... they now only display the "core" CPI / Inflation figures that remove both of these.
It seems to me just a little to convenient that the two areas that have increased considerably the most over the years they have decided to remove from their own figures due to these dubious reasonings.
