    I've been wondering about this, but haven't yet found anything which explains how they can be confident the Argo samples are representative of such large volumes of water.

    Water isn't a good conductor of heat, so it would have to be convection and mixing that distributed the heat evenly.

    The buoys do move around, though, horizontally and vertically, so averaging would give a more accurate estimate of the temperature.

    Even so, 0.003 C seems more than optimistic.
