Sydney - Inspired by the recent auction for $28 000 (about R160 000) of a grilled cheese sandwich said to bear the image of the Virgin Mary, a Sydney man has sold a Kellogg's Nutri-Grain resembling ET for $800 (about R5 000), The Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Chris Doyle said that buyers from around the world submitted 40 bids on eBay for the thumbnail-size piece of cereal bearing a likeness to the movie character ET, the Extra-Terrestrial.

The winning bid was about R5 000, a big profit from a R15 box of breakfast cereal, said Doyle, who did not reveal the identity of the winning bidder.

"I just didn't think it would go this far," the 27-year-old graphic designer said.

"I was just trying to find someone who feels the same way about ET as they do about the Virgin Mary," he said.

Last week an online casino in Miami, Florida, paid $28 000 in an eBay auction to acquire a 10-year-old, partly eaten grilled cheese sandwich bearing an image some say resembles the Virgin Mary.
