The problem with executive bonuses is they are tilted significantly to the revenue and share price metrics which influences capex and opex spend profiles over the year.

Less of the former tends to mean longer term strategic spend gets kicked to the gutter with some fancy accounting so the bonus is met. Fairly common in this era of hyper financialization, where they are rewarded for short term performance and not sustainable growth.

I guess that is the sort of thing you can do without any concerns if there's zero competition to sharpen a lazy board and executive team. To help cloud issues, a good old controversy thrown in to divert folk from the real game plan helps. Nice tactic when you are arrogant and without a competitive tensor. Anyone familiar with any of those instance?
