We can only speculate, but keep in mind that as part of the entitlement offer they provided the market with significant updates, most of which would only have been included in the annual results due out in a couple of weeks. These were likely better than the market was expecting - especially when you consider the lifeless market valuation that currently exists on VBA.

Another factor is Branson's Virgin Group coming out with a strong participation including partial underwriting of the offer. We don't know if this goes against what the market was thinking but it most certainly went against what the press was thinking - they had all but ruled out this possibility.
